The Most Common Questions I Get After a Sound Bath (and My Honest Answers)
One of my favorite parts of hosting Sound Baths and healing events happens after the final note fades. Everyone is softer, more grounded, and wonderfully present. The stress from the day dissolves, shoulders drop, and people linger—blissed out, open, and curious.
This is when community comes alive.
People share their experiences, ask thoughtful questions, and explore the sensations that came up for them. I will happily stay an extra hour if it means every person feels seen and heard. Holding space in this way is one of the greatest gifts of this work.
The experience of a Sound Bath is truly magical. The sounds, the sensations, the emotions that move through you - it’s powerful, and it often sparks questions. And most of those questions revolve around crystal singing bowls: why something felt a certain way, how to understand what came up, or how to choose a bowl of their own.
Without going into the full depth I reserve for my trainings, here are the questions I get asked most often - along with the responses I share during those beautiful post-event conversations.
Post Sound Bath Q&A at a retreat in WNC
Q: “I felt like I was floating. Is that normal?”
A: That’s amazing!
And also: there’s really no such thing as “normal.” Every Sound Bath is uniquely shaped by your body, your breath, your energy, and whatever you are carrying that day.
That said, most people experience sound on three general levels:
Listening — You hear each note, like listening to music.
Feeling — The vibrations begin to move through and around your body.
Experiencing — The sound is everywhere. You become part of it. This is often where floating sensations happen.
That final level is where people describe feeling weightless, held, or deeply expanded—as if everything is woven together. It truly is incredible.
Q: “One particular sound was really irritating. Why?”
A: Assuming you weren’t too close to the bowls and you don’t have hearing or sensory sensitivities, this usually means a particular note was interacting with energy that needed to be released.
Sound penetrates every cell, and as the saying goes: we hold our issues in our tissues. Any intentional practice - yoga, breathwork, meditation, sound - can bring old emotions or memories to the surface.
If a sound feels irritating or activating, try:
Breathing consciously: “I am inhaling. I am exhaling.”
Observing without judgment: Notice what’s arising.
Letting sensations move: Don’t force them in or out. Imagine watching clouds drift by.
Taking space if needed: It’s okay to step out, ground yourself, and return when ready.
This discomfort is not a sign something is “wrong”. It often means something is shifting.
Q: “Do singing bowls coordinate with the 7 chakras?”
A: Yes. Just like chakras have coordinating colors, they also resonate with specific notes.
For example:
Root (Muladhara) has a slow, steady frequency, mirrored by the note C and the color red, the lowest frequency of visible light.
Crown (Sahasrara) vibrates much faster, mirrored by B and violet, the highest visible frequency.
From Root to Crown, the general correspondences are:
C – Root
D – Sacral
E – Solar Plexus
F – Heart
G – Throat
A – Third Eye
B – Crown
Most people reference chakras more than notes because it’s easier to relate to energetically.
Q: “Do I need a bowl for each chakra?”
A: Absolutely not!
Even though each chakra aligns with a note, the chakras work as a system, not isolated points. When one center shifts into balance, the others naturally respond.
During my Sound Baths I use all seven bowls, but in private sessions I often select only two or three. I also know incredible Sound Practitioners who work solely with a few bowls at a time.

Q: “If I only buy one singing bowl, which note should I choose?”
A: The one you feel most drawn to.
While many practitioners have their favorites (mine are C and F), what truly matters is your natural resonance with the bowl. You’ll play the one you connect with most easily, and that relationship is important.
If possible, try a few bowls in person before choosing.
Q: “What size bowl should I get?”
A: It depends on your intention and whether you plan to build a set.
General rule of thumb:
Smaller bowl = higher pitch
Larger bowl = deeper pitch
In a seven-bowl set, you’ll often see sizes from 14” down to 8”, with the C being the largest and the B being the smallest. But this isn’t a strict rule. If you want a 20” C and a 16” D, go for it. Let your ears and intuition guide you.
Q: “How can I learn to play a singing bowl?”
A: There are three main ways, and all are valuable:
Teach yourself.
Buy a bowl, explore, and let your intuition lead you.Learn by observing.
Watch videos, attend Sound Baths, read guides. Absorb everything.Take a training.
Live or online, learning from an experienced teacher can help you refine your technique and avoid common mistakes.
Ideally, do a little of all three.
Q: “Should I buy a crystal singing bowl on Amazon?”
A: I don’t recommend it.
I’m not against buying bowls online - many of mine were. But I am particular about where they come from. These are healing tools, and sourcing matters. Craftsmanship matters. Ethics matter. And crystal bowls can be damaged in ways that aren’t always visible but can affect sound quality.
I consider these sacred instruments. Whenever possible, I suggest:
finding a local shop
supporting a local artist
or working with a teacher who knows how to guide you
The experience and connection are worth it.
